"POI and routing problems but otherwise?" 2009-08-01
By Brad A (USA)
The overall menu (GUI) is pretty good from my point of view. The menu buttons are for the most part self explanatory and with the HELP button (a very nice touch) it's not hard to find your way around this thing. The map display is pretty good and gives several options on how it's displayed. Another nice touch is the emergency feature of just touching the "Vehicle symbol" and getting local emergency info/directions on Police, Hospitals and the like. Options on the whole are pretty complete; enough that I'm not going to talk about most of them because I'm sure I'll ramble too much anyway. I will say though I haven't had a chance to see the real view junction thing, with only 3000 I didn't expect too much with that small of a %.

The different ways to search for something by alphabetical, distance and maybe City/State (sorry I can't remember for some reason how that worked) are ok and it even tells you what direction per a little arrow it is from you. It doesn't support searching along the route just what's near your current position. You really can't fault that, as far as I know there's only one that does it on PC. The restaurant search luckily has an ALL button to help with finding the ones you just don't know how to classify. Burger King would be listed under fast food but Angela's can be a little difficult to figure out when you're out of town and meeting friends there. This does bring me to one of my first disappointments about this soft. All the buttons are very finger friendly except when you get to the search area (I think this is just for the Alpha search), for some reason they left the on screen keyboard at full size and give you this tiny little window and even smaller arrow keys. I think the display window for searches will only show about 2 lines of 15~20 characters (think of an old calculator with a two line display). Something it does nicely during this search and other input modes, is the auto complete feature. Kinda sorta similar to phones but this one will also show you names and places with the letters in them. If you type "urg" and nothing in its database starts with that it switches to Burger King with urg highlighted.

By far the biggest cons for this soft would be' the card setup; POI handling; menu options that just don't work in a way that makes sense; and the routing has some issues too. I have an iPaq 211 used for work/play and thought this soft would be a nice addition sense I carry it around all the time anyway. With the program locked to the card I can't use any of the other much/bigger better ones I have already. On top of that sense the 211 has both an SD and CF card slot, I can't start this without pulling out both cards and just having the proprietary one in by itself. Apparently even though the program wont work without the original card in, it still looks to the CF card first and if its not the right one it shuts down with no errors (it took 2 days and several back and forth e-mails from i-nav to figure that out). The POI handling should have been done with some kind of update/add option. I haven't had any problems with missing or wrong streets but the POI databases is lacking badly. One instance was a recent trip to a large chain store that had been there for at least 3 years but was not listed. On the other hand a very, very out of the way local store was. The routing seems ok most of the time but it has sent me way of track. I've never had a problem eventually getting to were I need to go. On a resent trip (600+ miles) it took me on a 300 mile detour (the whole detour was 300 start to finish, I can't say how much it added to total trip mileage). I read somewhere it has historical data on traffic that can and will effect your routing. In my case it shunted me up to another interstate by way of back roads/old highways instead of going thro a major city. On the way back it let me go thro but that was a Sunday early morning. If this is the case and it was trying to save me then great, but either way it took 2 more hours going then coming back because of it. The destination handling is problematic under certain circumstances. This coupled with itinerary or stop over options can leave a bad taste. On one instance while trying it out I had it "stop over" at a local supermarket. When I arrived in the parking lot it had the destination target somewhere in the store, without physically reaching that I couldn't proceed to my next stop without starting the trip again. Another trip had the target on the large property but no where near the entrance so again I either had to drive around the back or just start the trip over (there maybe away around this but didn't look to hard for it). This brings up another menu problem. While on a trip its way to easy to cancel your whole route by accident if you don't complete the adjustments the way it wants. What I mean by that is if you try and use the stop over option to find a restaurant or gas and don't see one you want; exiting that search can exit the trip altogether. The fog alert is mostly useless. The idea is to warn you of any 4 way intersection that may have cross traffic. The problem is it sounds when you get to the intersection not before. On a highway doing 60 it would sound after it was too late to do anything about it anyway. The Route Demo is an unbelievable joke. It will show you in real time the whole trip with turns and voice props. To explain that further; if your planning a trip that will take 9 hours the Demo will take 9 hours too. It's completely worthless unless you're into watching paint dry then It may be worth something (if I'm wrong about this and someone can point out how to do it right let me know). I think the longest I let it go was 30 seconds.

All in all I'm still giving 3 stars for the many features that do work well and it has never gotten me lost. Plus with the possibility of update/fixes and some third party POI tools, there's hope for even the things wrong with it.

"Gets me there all of the time!" 2009-06-09
By M. NEGRON (Waterford, MI)
I have been using IGuidance since version 2.0. This software has been getting better and better. I combines a lot of the features that others have. In this revision they included Maps for Puerto Rico, USVI, Alaska and HI. I used to like the feature in past versions where you could create a mile radious for the are you where going to be at so that the maps were smaller and faster...but I guess sometimes something has to give. The fact that you now have all the maps stored in the card saves time. Which, by the way, forced me to give the product 4 stars instead of 5. Locking the software to THEIR card handicaps some of us... The card sizes are 4 and 8Gb but the bad part is that their cards are rated at class 4 and not 6... I use my PDA phone for Iguidance and I have a lot of data in it including my MP3 files and 8gb is cutting it short. I would rather have the option to have the software stored in a 16Gb class 6 card even if it comes at a cost. I called INav and asked if I could provide my own card and they said that they could not accommodate that request. In any event, Iguidance is still my preferred navigation program for the Pocket PC. Two cool things I like are; Turn by Turn navigation with side of the road indication of the destination and school zone warnings. The only thing that still remains in my wish list is the ability to edit FAVORITES in my Laptop/Desktop PC since the PDA phone keyboards are too small. I would highly recommend this product.

 "Not worth it - don't bother" 2007-10-13
By Jeff Zhang (Wellesley, MA United States)
The software is very slow on Palm. The search take a light year to get anything done. It's not worth trying it - even if they give you money. I can not believe they are selling it for money. Stay away from it!!

"If you are looking for a street mapping program for your PDA, don't buy this one" 2007-02-18
By Cham Green (Merryland)
The product is not good. I gave it 2 stars because it did successfully download onto my PDA, but beyond that it was difficult and confusing. If you couple this product with a GPS system it will work, you will know where you are. However, the routing function on the PDA is a disaster and it will jam up if your route is more than a few miles resulting in the operator having to reset their device. Several of the roads are not joined in the program's software which causes the program to create some pretty interesting routes.

The computer interface is very confusing, I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out how to save a route so that it will successfully transfer to my Palm. I did read the other bad reviews before I purchased this product but I had not choice because I wanted to integrate my DeLorme TOPOs onto my PDA and there was no other way to do it. Maps are only provided in 2D, which is pathetic considering there are so many good 3D mapping programs on the market.

If you can avoid buying this product please do so. Many of the major mapping companies have opted to make the PDA interface standard with their mapping programs, if Delorme is trying to force its PDA customers to cough up additional money for a PDA interface the least the company could do is create a worthwhile product.

"Not Easy to Use, But Works Great" 2007-01-29
By Zen Williston (Heavenly Valley, NV United States)
I have an Ipaq RX3115 with bluetooth GPS. SA Handheld works great with the combination. I have made routes on the Ipaq (with difficulty) and the routing has been right on the money every mile. The voice commands are very nice (along with the routing), making the program a better choice for those who need those features. Otherwise Streets and Trips is a better choice for handhelds and definitely a better choice for laptops since it has the routing and voice commands for laptops. Overall I am pleased with the program due to the added extras that S&T does not have.

 "Just plain awful" 2006-09-13
By B. Metzger
This software is simply unusable. The routes generated on the PDA bear no relationship to reality, the verbal instructions to turn occur as you are passing the turn, not before, and the tech support just ignores you. Avoid at all costs.

"Price is the only draw to this package" 2006-07-18
By J. D. Shulmister (Plant City, FL USA)
If price is the key to your buying decision, then this is the package for you. If ease of use and reliability are more your bag, keep looking. This review is based on the PALM version of the software.

Desktop: graphics are not nearly as nice as Microsoft's Strets & Trips, and it doesn't appear to allow you to export multiple routes in one shot to the hand-held. To bad MS doesn't make a Palm client.

Routing: frequently tried to take me off road between curvy sections of an interstate.

Bluetooth GPS: This is my biggest complaint. It FREQUENTLY loses connnection to my bluetooth GPS receiver. I've run other software on the same Palm T|X without ever losing connectivity. DeLorme represents reinstalling the package. Sure. At least that will get me to hang up the phone.

Tracking: gives notice that you have a turn coming up in "less than one half mile." Ok...what about when ALL your turns are in a short distance? Should be configurable to give additional notices.

       "Works very well" 2008-06-25
By Dale A. Barnard (Driftwood, TX USA)
Holds a charge forever. Grabs signal fast. Holds the signal when stuffed into a backpack or when it falls on the floor of the car and slides under the dash. How's it do that? The switch feels a little cheap, but it hasn't broken. The LED lights are cryptic and require a manual within easy reach, which is why I docked it a star. Works great with my T-Mobile MDA. Very simple to use. Great!

       "Great Little Unit" 2007-08-22
      By Tim Wessman (ID, USA)
I've used many little bluetooth GPS units before because I develop land surveying equipment. I've also used many survey grade recievers that cost $40K. I know what I am talking about.

This one is by far the best cheap hand-held unit I've used. Battery lasts for ages and the satellite acquisition is really fast compared to other chipsets. I left it sitting outside for a week once, still turned on, and due to the power save mode it still worked when I remembered about it a week later and reconnected. Ran for another 8 hours or so before it finally ran out of juice.

It will even get satellites in a basement under a 2 story house. Of course, the location isn't very accurate, but the fact that it even gets a signal is very impressive.

Size-wise it is smaller than a deck of cards - about the size of a really small flip cell phone. 3 AA batteries together, and one lengthwise across them endwise is the approximate size.

Can't go wrong with this unit. It is standard bluetooth serial port profile (SPP slave) and streams NMEA data the moment you connect. The strings it supports are GGA,GSA,GSV,RMC.

       "Amazing Receiver" 2007-02-10
      By R. Herrer (Chicago, IL)
If you do your research you'll find out that this GPS receiver has by far the most channels (32), one of the most accurate chips (158dBm) and one of the most long lasting batteries (32hrs), but enough about technical details, if you're looking for a BT GPS receiver that will will work with your windows mobile device, don't look any further, this is the product for you.

I couldn't get it to work with Google Maps but that was a google issue so instead I'm using it with Windows Live and it works great!

"They should offer a larger diameter handlebar clamp." 2009-05-05
        By bobert
It aint that hard to figure out without directions. There's only four bolts, two nylok nuts and four plastic molded pieces. I don't know what kind of plastic this material is, but without too much effort I had no problem prying apart the handlebar clamp. But I can see where it might be too tough for some. Believe me, if this clamp got stressed to the point of snapping you would know about it. The handlebar bracket was a sloppy fit, but wrappng a few turns of black electricians tape around the circumferance of the handlebar between it and the clamp took up the slop. No slop after I tightened it. Solid as a rock. Now, my handlebars are only 22 mm diam. close to the brake cable mounts and then it flares up to 25mm in diam. towards the gooseneck. So now you know what to expect. I agree they should offer a larger diameter handlebar clamp and print a diameter spec to go along with it.

"Check your handlebar thickness before buying" 2008-09-28
        By FJW (Warwick, NY)
I ordered this for a new road bike and was disappointed at the lack of documentation and that the cheap plastic bracket almost snapped when I put it on my handlebars. The handlebars were way too thick for the screw holes to line up even with a longer screw as the previous reviewer noted. There are no dimensions listed for maximum handlebar thickness yet there needs to be as newer bikes are larger.

"Needs instructions and a longer screw..." 2008-08-27
        By P. Whatley (Birmingham, AL)
Recieved item, it shipped without any paperwork (instructions). It came with two screws and nuts to connect a fixed piece to the bike, then it has another screw to connect another piece to the fixed mount on the bike. The screw for this piece was too short. You are able to connect it, but only about two threads catch. I went ahead and connected and put the PN-20 on it, but it was too loose. I had to go to the hardware store and purchase a longer screw to make it work.
